Annual General Meeting (AGM) & Speaker Series: Geopolitical Impacts on Forecasted Oil Prices

September 18, 2014:

As always, the Energy Club executives were very excited to be hosting the first event of the year, our Annual General Meeting (AGM) and Speaker Series talk by Richard Dixon. The AGM  gave members a chance to learn about the Energy Club's mission statement and past events, it also  provided the opportunity for members to comment on the 2014 - 2015 event program. Following the AGM, Richard Dixon of the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER)  discussed the impacts of geopolitical instability on global oil prices. The Crisis in Ukraine and instability in the Middle East are impacting present and forecasted crude oil prices. Richard Dixon is the Chief of Strategic Foresight with the AER.

Field Trip: Strathcona Community Energy Centre

October 20, 2014:

The Energy Club organized a field trip to the Strathcona Community Energy Centre, set in the middle of Sherwood Park. Strathcona’s community energy (district energy) system supplies efficient and sustainable thermal energy to customers in the “Centre in the Park” development.

The system supplies hot water throughout the development primarily by combusting agricultural residues in a biomass combustion boiler, and by using natural gas as backup. Utilizing biomass reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 1200 tonnes per year. The trip was a successful event giving an opportunity to students to familiarize with biomass boiler system and its important role in developing a sustainable future.

Speaker Series: Carbon Management with ICO2N

Picture
November 13, 2014:

The club hosted a carbon management planning event with our Sponsors ICO2N (Integrated CO2 Network). Technical and policy experts from  ICO2N provided an overview of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) in Canada, and shared the technological, social, and economic factors influencing the clean energy technology.

In addition, they moderated a group brainstorming session, in which students had the unique opportunity to discuss carbon management strategies from the perspectives of government, industry and the public. ICO2N is a group of Canadian companies who have a commitment and a strong interest to develop Carbon Capture and storage in Canada.

Field Trip: Renewable Energy Field Trip @ Solar Communities in Alberta

March 27, 2015:

The Energy Club held a one day field trip to two different community solar and energy efficiency projects in southern Alberta:

  • Drake Landing Solar Community - Okotoks, AB. Drake Landing is a neighbourhood in Okotoks, AB which heats 52 homes using solar thermal and district energy systems. Participants received a tour of the facilities and got to learn more about the project from those involved. This master planned neighbourhood  has successfully integrated Canadian energy efficient technologies with a renewable, unlimited energy source - the sun.
